Our History

1978

The Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) begins its activities in Porto. This very year, Catholic's School of Law starts the first course of Law in the city of Porto, at Foz campus. The School also creates the pre-college year of a Law Course in Portugal.

 

1984

Creation of the Faculty of Biotechnology, a pioneer school in Portugal, at Asprela campus.

 

1987

Launch of the Undergraduate Programme in Business Administration and Management in Porto, at Foz campus, as an extension of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Lisbon.

The Faculty of Theology launches its Undergraduate Programme in Porto, at Foz campus.

 

1996

Creation of the School of Arts, also a pioneer school in Portugal, at Foz campus.

 

2001

Creation of the School of Economics and Management in Porto at Foz campus.

 

2002

Creation of the Institute of Bioethics of UCP, the pioneer Portuguese Institute for research and graduate programmes in this area, at Foz campus.

Launch of the School of Business Administration (CGA Atlantic Business School) in partnership with leading business associations and other Universities, at Foz campus.

 

2004

Transfer of the Head Office of the Institute of Education to Porto, at Foz campus, and launch of the Undergraduate Programme in Psychology.

Establishment of the Institute of Health Sciences, comprising all the training in Health operating in regional centres of Lisbon, Porto and Viseu.

 

2006

The Institute of Health Sciences strengthens its education in Porto, in Asprela campus, with the integration of the Nursing College Immaculate Conception.

 

2007

Creation of the Faculty of Education and Psychology of UCP in Porto at Foz campus, due to an administrative update of the Institute of Education.

 

2008

Launch of the GIQE dynamic, where the academic community defined the Catholic University in Porto Strategic Plan for 2009 - 2013.

 

2009

The Catholic University in Porto launches the brand Catholic 4th cycle, a new concept of learning with University Programmes for people over 55 years, short and summer courses for new audiences, post graduate programmes, leveraging the transversal backgrounds and knowledge from all the Faculties.

 

2010

Launch of the Institute for Public Administration, Governance and Public Policies, with the presentation of the first Master in Public Administration (MPA) in Portugal.
