The aging of the population is today a peculiar phenomenon unique in the history of the humanity: if, on one hand, the life expectancy as much at birth as at 65 and more years has never been so high, the rates of aging, illness and dependence of the elderly have never been so high.
Aging, naturally related to longevity, has been accompanied, on the whole, by deficits in self-care and by disabilities for the development of activities at different levels, aggravated by the most prevalent diseases at this stage of life.
In Portugal, the number of elderly people living in support structures or accompanied at home by different teams of caregivers is progressively increasing; but residents have on average about 80 years of age and multiple pathologies, and more and more people are dependent on self-care and have functional and cognitive deficits. These people need specialized help.
In this context, we present a study plan clearly oriented to the promotion of health and geriatric care, without neglecting ethical and legal issues, specific contextual research and the problems faced by families and support structures for assistance in this age group, hoping to contribute to the training of professionals with care responsibilities and management of these structures to promote the dignity and comfort of people assisted at this stage of their lives.
